Loving Margaret River

Loving Margaret River

Growing up in the Hunter Valley, Ben Miller has working with wine for as long as he can remember. But the last leg of his journey took him from Coonawarra to Margaret River, and he’s really noticed the difference.

“After the dry, flat spaces of Coonawarra, I was really struck by the sheer beauty of the region. We’re surrounded by Karri Forest – ancient trees that are 500 to 600 years old – and it feels like a privilege to come to work. And, of course, it’s only about 10 minutes to the beach. The surf here’s a lot better than South Australia, even if I spend most of my time just trying to get up.”

Ben has also found there’s a great deal of camaraderie among the winemakers. “We all live in the township of Margaret River and, being a relatively small team, see each other quite a bit outside of work. We even play in a local mixed sports comp against the other wineries – one week it’s basketball, the next volleyball – but it’s a very friendly rivalry.”

Right now, Ben is helping develop the 2011 Chardonnay. “We were tasting on the bench last week with a lot of potential components. Blending and tasting is, for me, the most enjoyable part. It’s definitely the art of winemaking, discerning concentration, balance and mouth feel to determine how it will come together and how it will vintage. If everyday was blending, it would be the perfect job.”
