A good year for frogs

Simon Robertson has been at Devil’s Lair from virtually the very beginning, planting vines and nurturing the estate to success. But this year, apart from his usual viticultural duties, Simon has also been tending to the well-being of the white-bellied frog.

Geocrinia  Alba, for you Latin speakers, is very small, very cute and critically endangered. And, unfortunately, 82% of its natural habitat occurs on privately-owned land. So Devil’s Lair, along with other properties in the area, agreed to take part in a revegetation of its waterways in order to ensure the survival of this fragile species.

The winery has already been running a self-funded program for the last decade, but Simon really appreciated help from volunteers in planting sedges along the brook. “It’s back-breaking work,” says Simon, “But this little guy really needs our help. We rely on nature, so it’s nice to give something back.”
